SWiT Strategy Overview
CAF-FCA is a national, non-profit organization leading a national effort to support women in the trades.
Supporting Women in the Trades (SWiT)
At its Supporting Women in Trades Conferences, CAF-FCA consulted with 300 plus tradeswomen from multiple trades and regions about the changes they would like to see to better support women as they progress through their apprenticeship on their way to becoming certified Red Seal tradeswomen. Key issues included more awareness about apprenticeship and careers in the skilled trades at elementary and high school, fairer hiring practices, access to affordable day care, quality training and mentorship and inclusion in the skilled trades workforce.
Driven by the issues tradeswomen identified as important, the National Task Force is creating a National Strategy to Support Women in the Trades. The strategy will be launched at CAF-FCA’s National Apprenticeship Conference from May 24th to 26th in Calgary, Alberta.
CAF-FCA is setting targets and CAF-FCA will measure the number of women participating in apprenticeship to track results.
Along with the National Task Force, CAF-FCA will advocate for women in the trades ensuring barriers to success are addressed.
All tradeswomen are invited to participate in CAF-FCA’s upcoming SWIT Conference in 2021 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
National Targets 2020-2030
CAF-FCA has committed to setting and measuring targets as a part of its National Strategy to Support Women in the Trades.
CAF-FCA will track results from 2020 to 2030 by analyzing Statistics Canada labour force and Registered Apprenticeship Information System data each year.
