Training approach
Kiewit spends an average of $7,500 per employee each year on training and career development, well above the U.S. national average across all industries. Professional certifications and licenses are reimbursed at 100% of the employee’s cost.
Depending on your role, employees can participate in a variety of training programs and training delivery methods. From on-the-job, formal corporate schools and self-directed learning, if you have a willingness to learn and grow, there are countless opportunities to further your development and to help you advance in your career.
At Kiewit, supervisors train and develop employees to take on additional responsibilities to prepare them for their next role and to advance in their careers. For craft employees, supervisors:
- Identify individuals interested in joining apprentice programs.
- Create development plans that expose them to new skills and responsibilities related to their apprentice program and/or industry.
- Provide apprentices with a mentor.
- Ensure mentors know how to train and develop apprentices.
In addition to these efforts, we’re committed to providing an inclusive, supportive work environment for employees of all backgrounds. Groups like our Women in Kiewit initiative help us solidify and strengthen our efforts to attract, retain and develop women who are passionate about the construction and engineering industry.
We are an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, protected veteran status or other characteristics protected by law.
Advice to prospective apprentices
If you are looking to become an apprentice you should find a mentor, ask questions and don’t be afraid to take on new tasks. Always ask for help when you need it – everything you do will be learning opportunity. As an apprentice it is important that you keep safety top of mind, everyone is responsible for safety at any positions and level.
Kiewit understands the importance of ensuring apprentices have the opportunity to gain well rounded experience, so we put a focus on rotating our craft to new jobs based on experience they have or need to acquire.
